Kadi Vija (b. 1985, FIN/EST) is a vocal instrumentalist who treats the human voice as a horn instrument, a rhythm machine, and a carrier of stories from an unfamiliar language.
Rooted in vocal jazz improvisation yet constantly moving beyond it, Vija’s music lives in the space between sound and meaning. Their crystal-clear tone, microscopic control, and minimalist presence draw the listener into a world where syllables become melodies and breath becomes rhythm.
In 2025, Vija released Tiny Hands Gathering Wonder, The World Becomes Magic, produced by Teppo Mäkynen and released by Mustik Motel Music. The album, expanding their sound into electronics, received the Emma Award for Jazz of the Year and the Indie Awards Jazz Album of the Year. Earlier that year, Freedom explored the idea of the vocalist as a wind instrument within a traditional trio setting.
Vija’s work moves between modernism, jazz, electronics, and a deep fascination with rhythmic variety. Whether performing solo, with ensembles, or orchestras, their focus remains the same: to balance being outside of comfort with a sense of sincerity and ease.
For Vija, the voice is not a vehicle for lyrics.
It is an instrument for wonder.
